Application Files - Files that are created by any computer application. Common application files are Excel spreadsheets (.XLS), Word documents (.DOC) and Power Point presentations (.PPT). Attachment - Any file associated with or attached to an e-mail. Attachment - a process used to maintain and document the chronological history of evidence, ensuring that the data presented is "as originally acquired" and has not been altered prior to admission into evidence. Checksum - also referred to as a hash, this is a number calculated based on the contents of an electronic file; it is used to uniquely identify the file. Deduplication - the process of providing one instance of an item when there was more than one identical copy. The deduplication uses one or more identifying characteristics to determine duplicates. These characteristics can include any piece of metadata or a checksum. Discovery - a pre-trial process in which each party tries to find all the information held by the other party and by certain third parties that is relevant, probative and can be admitted into evidence at trial. Each party is required to cooperate with the other to the extent required by the relevant rules of civil procedure.
